@ Oct 24 2k8: Autodesk Signs Agreement with Avid Technology to Acquire Softimage
Autodesk, Inc. and Avid Technology, Inc. announced that they have signed a definitive agreement for Autodesk to acquire substantially all of the assets of Avid’s Softimage business unit for approximately $35 million. Upon completion of the acquisition, Autodesk intends to continue developing and selling Softimage’s core product line, while integrating certain Softimage technology into future versions of Autodesk solutions and products. The Alienbrain asset management system will remain with Avid.

Then use DiskAid to transfer your files to /private/var/media. It's a nice little client that allows file transfer via USB to the iPhone. Now Mac users can transfer files via USB just like the Windows folks. DiskAid is a quick, 100% free download for either Mac or PC.

dpreview.com: Photokina 2008: Adobe has lifted the lid on Creative Suite 4, the latest version of its huge design and production suite. Of most interest to photographers will of course be Photoshop CS4, which brings some interface changes (tabbed windows) as well as 64-bit Windows support and OpenGL support to use graphics cards to speed up operations (and provide nifty zoom and rotation tools) and a new non-modal approach to adjustment layers.

engadget.com: The new 4th generation iPod nano: 9 colors, bigger $149 8GB and $199 16GB capacity, and wider 2-inch display under the control of an accelerometer for automatic switching between portrait and landscape modes. Apple also updated the iPod touch with a new thinner stainless steel case, hardware volume controls (hooray!) and a built-in speaker, and a Nike+ receiver. Watch the event here.

dpreview.com: Nikon has announced the successor to its popular D80 middleweight digital SLR in the shape of the D90. The D90 looks very similar, but underneath it's a completely new camera that's inherited advanced features from further up the line and user-friendly features from the D40/D60 range. Oh, and it's the world's first digital SLR with a movie mode. Other features of note include a new 12.3 MP CMOS sensor, the D3/D300/D700's fab high resolution 3.0-inch screen and continuous shooting at up to 4.5 frames per second. @ Aug 11 2k8: The Premiere 3D Conference now in 3D!
Siggraph 2008 at the LA Convention Center is all about 3D! Not that it hasn't always been, it's just that expect 3D glasses from Dolby to be the in-thing next year when most movies dive into the technology. We've seen this phenomenon start this year, but when home theater screens and high-definition creep into consumers' homes - theater owners and movie producers need to find a way to keep audiences running to the theatre. They even previewed Star Wars Episode 4 in 3D! Awesome! See you this December in Singapore and next year in New Orleans!

MacUser: A group of researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are working on creating a $12 computer based on the 30-year-old Apple II.
The team is actively recruiting enthusiasts of the retro computers to help develop the new PC as a desktop computer that plugs directly into a standard television.

washingtonpost.com: Samsung Electronics is the first hard drive manufacturer to ship a 500GB 2.5-inch drive. Samsung announced the SpinPoint M6 early this year, but Hitachi was the first company to announce a 500GB 2.5-inch hard drive, before the start of the 2008 International Consumer Electronics Show. Fujitsu also recently announced its intention to offer a 500GB drive.
